Retraining the way I think

As I was straightening up the kitchen, I reached for the box of Cheerios (the kids had left out) to put them in the pantry. My hand reached down into the bag for a handful. I stopped. What was I doing? I wasn't hungry. I didn't even want the Cheerios. The food was just there and I was ready to grab some.
I have decided that losing weight is 90% mental and 10% physical. I love exercise, and know that it is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but for me, getting to the gym is the tough part, not the actual exercise.
It's the same with eating. I have to retrain my brain to not stuff anything that looks good into my mouth. Thoughtful, conscious eating is huge. So many times when I screw up I start eating before I start thinking.
So, I'm hoping you will all give me some ideas as to how to accomplish this. Go to it, tell me your tricks. I'm ready to retrain my brain!

  1. There are worse things than Cheerios to snack on. In fact, I wrote about them today. I don't have any tricks up my sleeves about retraining the brain. I find it easier not to snack for that reason. A handful of Cheerios becomes a PB&J before I know it. Cheerios for breakfast? Perfect.

You've lost 66 pounds. Apparently you're doing something right.

  2. I am exactly like this too. I literally have to walk away and get out of the room and think of something else. Same with TV commercials. I have to look away or my stomach starts growling and I choose something unhealthy. Another thing that works for me is choosing a healthier option of the food I'm tempted to eat. For instance, the kids I watch REALLY like cheez its and goldfish (and i do too!). So whenever they eat this for snack, I eat a low fat cheese stick at the same time. Still gives me that "cheese" fix but doesn't allow me to go overboard on calories. I agree with "what a splurge" though, and say cheerios is definitely not such a bad snack!!

  3. I can relate to what you are saying about eating when not even hungry. It's not whether or not it's a good or bad type choice, but that we are sooo into the habit that we do it like a robot! One habit that I had to break was nibbling here and there while fixing meals, or cooking food. That adds up fast!! So I started doing things like sticking a toothpick in my mouth, or chewing gum. That interrupts that mindless eating... you have to stop and think, and take OUT the toothpick, and choose to put IN the food. It at least made me pay attention, and I have more of a chance to get out of the habit.

Now the only time I give in to that old habit is if I allowed myself to get too hungry while having to prepare food. That's a toughie I am working on to not let happen.

By the way, they say you don't "stop" a habit very easily, but it works better to "replace" that old unwanted habit with a healthy new one (like the toothpick or gum idea). Maybe you could think of one that works for you, something to act like a "cue" that causes you to tune in before eating a bite.
Oh goodness, I'm getting longwinded here... sorry, just one more idea. This has made a HUGE difference for me. Now I have finally gotten into the habit of figuring the calories of stuff BEFORE I eat it. Talk about causing me to think!!
    Hope some of this helps,
    Loretta

  4. What has worked for me this time is I weigh, measure and record everything. As soon as you realize you have to record that handful of Cheerios - you have to decide whether they are worth having on your menu for the day.

Like What a Splurge said - you have lost 66 pounds so you are doing it right - just keep up the GREAT Work - not sure how old the kids are but get them to put away the Cheerios - actually you can never start too early.
